*Interpretation: the action of explaining the meaning of something.
*Referential Meaning: plot summary
*Explicit Meaning: the point of the work- the openly asserted meaning
*Implicit Meaning: more abstract meaning. something below the surface
*Symptomatic Meaning: still abstract and general. implicit meaning but it bears
the traces of a particular set of social values. the social ideology of the work.

"Viewers Make Meaning"
- The intended meaning encoded by creator is decoded by a viewer.
-"To interpellate, in the traditional usage of this concept, is to interrupt a procedure in order to
question someone or something formally" (p.50)
-Philosopher Michel Foucault, "What is an Author?". "The concept of author did not always exist and will probably pass out of relevance but that it is not exactly dead" (p.53)/ "author function" rather than "author"/
-"People may experience an image or media text differently from how it is inteded to be seeon, either because they bring experiences and associations that were not anticipated by its producers or because the meanings they derive are informed by the context in which an image is seen"(p.54)
